Should I use frozen or fresh spinach?
You can use both, but I recommend using frozen spinach dip. Just make sure it’s thawed and drained. To drain the water out of the spinach, you can use a strainer, pushing the spinach down to release the excess liquid, blot it with paper towels, or strain it by hand.
What ingredients are in this spinach dip?
This easy recipe uses the following ingredients:
- frozen spinach
- sour cream
- mayonnaise
- dry vegetable soup mix
- shredded mozzarella cheese
Some friends use cream cheese instead of sour cream but my version is always a huge hit and is one of my family’s favorite appetizers.

Can I add artichoke to this recipe?
Yes! You can add steamed artichoke hearts after you mix in the cheese.
Is spinach dip good for you?
Spinach dip can be good for you when it is made with healthy substitutes, such as Greek yogurt. This recipe does have fat and sodium, so it needs to be modified if you are watching your cholesterol or are trying to keep your heart as healthy as possible. Spinach is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, vitamin C, and iron, so this recipe does have good nutrients. If you swap the sour cream for Greek yogurt, the dip is a good source of protein and probiotics that can support gut health.
How can I make a healthy spinach dip?
For a healthier version of this recipe, swap the sour cream for plain Greek yogurt, use low fat olive oil mayo, and instead of the dry vegetable soup mix, use low or no sodium seasonings like Mrs. Dash. I would also use a teaspoon of cayenne pepper to add more flavor or smoked paprika. That way you will have a delicious dip that is lower in saturated fat, is low sodium, yet is creamy and flavorful. If you are not watching your sodium intake, feel free to use the dry vegetable soup mix.
