Favorite Concealers For Under Eye Dark Circles in 2024
Tired of looking tired and need to find the best concealers for dark circles under your eyes? Not only have I rounded up the causes of what makes under-eye skin look dark but also the top products and tips to look fresh and well-rested.
If you’re like me, you are always searching for the best concealers for dark circles. My under eye area can look extremely tired and even purplish unless I am wearing my favorite concealer. I have tried all kinds of formulations to see what works best. That’s why you will always find at least one concealer in my makeup bag.
Dark circles can be a common concern for many of us, whether they’re caused by late nights, genetics, or other factors. Fortunately, the right concealer can work wonders in camouflaging those pesky shadows and giving you a refreshed, awake appearance. But with so many options on the market, how do you choose the best concealer for dark circles?
For me it all comes down to a blendable formulation that offers buildable coverage with minimal creasing. Since I am over 40, it’s essential to use a concealer that doesn’t crease or settle into fine lines. A hydrating formula is a plus, but priming your skin in the delicate under eye area can also help your concealer provide a flawless look. If you’re on a budget, don’t worry because I included my favorite drugstore concealers, too.
Causes of dark circles
First, let’s figure out if there is anything you can do on your own to diminish the shadows under your eyes, Dark under-eye circles can have various causes, and often, it’s a combination of factors contributing to their appearance. Here are some of the main causes:
- Genetics: Genetics play a significant role in the development of under-eye circles. If your parents or grandparents have them, you are more likely to as well.
- Thin Skin: The skin under the eyes is thinner and more delicate than the skin on the rest of your face. This thinness can make blood vessels and the underlying structures more visible, leading to the appearance of dark circles.
- Aging: As you age, the skin loses collagen and becomes thinner, making blood vessels more noticeable. Additionally, fat and bone loss in the under-eye area can create shadows, contributing to dark circles.
- Fatigue and Lack of Sleep: Sleep deprivation or poor sleep quality can cause blood vessels to dilate and become more prominent, leading to dark circles. Fatigue can also make the skin look paler, making dark circles more noticeable.
- Dehydration: When your body is not adequately hydrated, the skin can become dry and appear dull. Dehydrated skin may exaggerate the appearance of dark circles.
- Allergies: Allergic reactions can lead to under-eye swelling and inflammation, making dark circles more prominent. Rubbing your eyes due to allergies can also worsen the issue.
- Heredity: Certain medical conditions, like eczema or atopic dermatitis, can be hereditary and cause skin discoloration, including under-eye circles.
- Sun Exposure: Prolonged sun exposure can cause pigmentation changes in the skin, including the under-eye area, making dark circles more noticeable.
- Iron Deficiency: Anemia or iron deficiency can lead to a decrease in oxygen supply to the body’s tissues, causing the skin to appear paler and increasing the visibility of blood vessels, resulting in dark circles.
- Underlying Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, like thyroid disorders or sinus problems, can cause dark circles as a symptom.
- Medications: Some medications can dilate blood vessels or cause fluid retention, potentially leading to the appearance of dark circles.
- Smoking and Alcohol Consumption: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can affect blood circulation, making dark circles more prominent.
- Excessive Rubbing or Scratching: Continuously rubbing or scratching the eyes can lead to skin irritation and darkening in the under-eye area.
It’s important to note that some people are more prone to dark circles due to a combination of these factors. Addressing the underlying cause, when possible, and incorporating a good skincare routine can help reduce the appearance of dark circles. This may involve getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, using sunscreen, managing allergies, and considering cosmetic treatments if needed.
What to look for when choosing a concealer
Let’s explore what to look for when selecting the perfect concealer to brighten up your eyes.
- Coverage level: One of the first things to consider is the coverage level you need. Concealers come in various coverage options: light, medium, and full. For dark circles, especially if they are prominent, opt for a concealer with at least medium to full coverage. This will effectively mask the darkness and provide a flawless finish.
- Shade match: Selecting the right shade is crucial. The concealer should be slightly lighter than your skin tone but not too starkly so. Choose a shade that complements your undertone (warm, cool, or neutral) to achieve a natural look. Testing the concealer on the inside of your wrist or jawline can help you find the perfect match.
- Formula: Consider the formula of the concealer. Creamy concealers are excellent for dark circles, as they provide good coverage and blend easily. Look for hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid to prevent creasing and dryness.
- Longevity: Nobody wants their concealer to fade away by midday. Opt for long-lasting formulas that will stay put throughout the day. Setting your concealer with a translucent powder can also help it last longer.
- Ingredients: Pay attention to the ingredients in the concealer, especially if you have sensitive skin. Avoid products with fragrances or potential irritants. Some concealers also include skincare ingredients like vitamin C or caffeine, which can help reduce the appearance of dark circles over time.
- Applicator: The applicator type can affect how easy it is to apply and blend your concealer. Many concealers come with wand applicators, which are great for precise application. Others come in pots or tubes, allowing you to use your fingers or a makeup brush.
- Allergies and sensitivities: If you have allergies or skin sensitivities, consider hypoallergenic, fragrance-free and non-comedogenic concealers that are less likely to cause irritation or breakouts.
- Skin type: Take your skin type into account. If you have dry skin, opt for a concealer with moisturizing properties. For oily skin, go for oil-free or matte formulas that control shine.

Most common mistakes when buying a concealer
Avoiding common mistakes when buying a concealer is essential to ensure you get the right product for your needs and achieve the best results. Here are some mistakes to steer clear of:
- Choosing the Wrong Shade:
- Too Light: Selecting a concealer that is excessively lighter than your skin tone can create a stark contrast and draw attention to the area you’re trying to conceal.
- Too Dark: On the other hand, a concealer that is too dark won’t effectively camouflage dark circles or blemishes.
- Skipping a Swatch Test:
- Always swatch the concealer on your skin before purchasing it. Test it on your inner wrist or jawline to ensure it matches your skin tone and undertone.
- Not Considering Undertone:
- Pay attention to the undertone of the concealer. If you have warm undertones, choose a concealer with a warm undertone; for cool undertones, opt for cool undertones. Using the wrong undertone can make your concealer look unnatural.
- Ignoring Skin Type:
- Different concealers are formulated for various skin types. If you have dry skin, avoid matte concealers, and opt for hydrating options. If you have oily skin, go for oil-free or matte formulas to prevent excess shine.
- Not Testing in Natural Light:
- Lighting in stores can be misleading. It’s best to test concealers in natural light to see how they truly look on your skin.
- Focusing Solely on Brand or Price:
- While reputable brands may offer quality products, don’t limit yourself to brand loyalty. Expensive products aren’t always better, and there are excellent concealers at various price points.
- Neglecting Ingredients:
- Check the ingredient list, especially if you have sensitive skin or allergies. Avoid concealers with known irritants, fragrances, or ingredients that you’re allergic to.
- Not Considering Coverage Needs:
- If you have severe dark circles or blemishes, don’t opt for a sheer or light-coverage concealer. Choose a medium to full coverage concealer to effectively conceal imperfections.
Choosing the best concealer for dark circles involves considering factors like coverage, shade, formula, longevity, ingredients, applicator, allergies, and skin type. Finding the right concealer may require some experimentation, but once you discover the perfect match, you’ll be well on your way to brightening up your eyes and achieving a flawless complexion. So, say goodbye to tired-looking eyes and hello to a refreshed and radiant appearance!
10 Tips When Applying Concealer
Applying concealer correctly is crucial to achieving a flawless and natural look.
Here are some tips to keep in mind when applying concealer:
- Prep Your Skin:
- Begin with a clean and moisturized face. Allow your moisturizer to sink into your skin before applying concealer. This helps it go on smoothly and prevents creasing. Find out about the best eye creams for under eye circles here.
- Use a Color Corrector (If Needed):
- If you have particularly stubborn dark circles with strong undertones (blue, purple, etc.), consider using a color corrector before applying concealer. Peach or orange correctors can neutralize these undertones. Bobbi Brown has wonderful correctors.
- Apply in a Triangle Shape for Dark Circles:
- When concealing dark circles, don’t just dab it directly on the dark area. Instead, apply the concealer in an inverted triangle shape with the base along your lower lash line and the tip extending towards your cheek. This not only conceals dark circles but also brightens and lifts the eye area.
- Dab or Stipple, Don’t Rub:
- Use your fingertip, a makeup sponge, or a concealer brush to gently dab or stipple the concealer onto the area you want to conceal. Avoid rubbing or dragging, as the skin around your eyes is delicate.
- Blend Well:
- Blend the concealer seamlessly into your skin by gently tapping or pressing it in. Blending ensures a natural look and prevents harsh lines.
- Set with Powder (Optional):
- If you have oily skin or want extra staying power, you can set your concealer with a light dusting of translucent setting powder. However, be cautious not to over-powder, as this can make the under-eye area look dry and crepey. My favorite setting powder? Pat MacGrath
- Highlight Other Areas (Optional):
- You can also use concealer to highlight other areas of your face, such as the bridge of your nose, the center of your forehead, and the chin. This creates balance and adds dimension to your face.
- Avoid Over-Application:
- Less is often more with concealer. Applying too much can result in a cakey appearance. A little goes a long way and you can always add more if needed.
- Clean Up Edges:
- After applying concealer, use a clean makeup brush or sponge to tidy up the edges and ensure a clean and polished look.
- Check in Natural Light:
- Before leaving your makeup area, check your concealer application in natural light to make sure it looks natural and well-blended.
Remember that practice makes perfect when it comes to makeup application. Don’t be discouraged if it takes a few tries to master the technique. With these tips and a bit of patience, you’ll be able to flawlessly conceal imperfections and achieve a radiant complexion.
