How to make tie dye masks with food coloring
Tie dye masks are not only on trend, but they are super easy to make at home. With this simple DIY, learn how to make them using food coloring.
If you have had a hard time finding liquid dye to do cool projects at home, this method allows you to use food coloring, which you probably already have.
If you want to try another technique, I highly recommend trying the Sharpies and alcohol tie dye method, but I would rather save the rubbing alcohol since it’s become scarce during the pandemic.
These DIY tie dye masks are a great project for tweens and teens, and that way they can also feel proud of the face coverings they make. If your kids also have an entrepreneurial spirit, tell them they can sell their masks.
Tie Dye masks DIY
You will need:
- A cloth mask (like Hanes or Fruit of the Loom)
- Food Coloring (any brand will work)
- Vinegar
- A small bowl to soak the mask in vinegar
- Plastic or Saran Wrap (or any plastic bag)
- Rubber band to hold mask in place
- 3 or more shampoo travel bottles (I found mine at a Dollar store)
- A plastic shopping bag and old shirt to hold the ‘dye’ as to not make a mess
Instructions:
- Pour a small amount of vinegar in a bowl and let the mask set for 1 hour
- While mask is soaking up vinegar, pour ¼ cup water into each shampoo bottle. Add 8 drops total of food coloring for lighter color masks or 16 drops total for darker color masks. You can mix and create your own colors, for example, deep purple by mixing 8 drops of red and 8 drops of blue.
- Once the mask has been soaking for an hour, rinse in water and then spread out over plastic bag/old shirt or newspaper.
- Add rubber bands to fabric as to create different patterns. I used a bullseye and vertical strips pattern.
- When you are finished, place the mask in plastic wrap for 4 hours to absorb color.
- After 4 hours, unwrap mask and let dry outside or hang in a bathtub/sink.
- After mask dries, rinse again in the sink and hand wash with light dish soap or laundry detergent.
- Let mask dry again and use to protect everybody from the spread of viruses!
