Happy Mother’s Day To The Perfectly Imperfect Moms
For the first time, today I’m spending Mother’s Day with just one of my two kids. My daughter is with her dance team in Canada, seeing how far she can go doing something she loves. It’s a reminder that all too soon they will be leading their own lives, spreading their wings and working hard to make their dreams come true. It’s also a sign that despite all the mistakes I’ve made, at least I have empowered them to spread their wings and see the world.
I am so grateful to be a mom. For me it was so important to experience this kind of undescribable, unconditional love. It’s a huge responsibility and challenge, too, but I have enjoyed every single stage. Yes, even the teen years, in which there are amazing discoveries about these young human beings while they question you at every turn. Don’t let the toxic narrative convince you that teenagers just create trouble and stress. We need to listen more and talk less to value, respect and encourage who they are becoming.
Many of my friends today deal with sadness and grief. Their moms are no longer with them, and today just reminds them of how much they miss them. A big hug, and may you find comfort in the beautiful memories you created together.
I also have friends who have lost their babies; I send you a huge hug, too.
Others grapple with the fact that the person who gave birth to them has been incapable of truly loving them. I hope you know that this has nothing to do with you, but with them. And I hope you have found mother-figures in your life that love you just as you are.
To all the perfectly imperfect moms just trying their best to love and raise good human beings, have a lovely Mother’s Day. To my mom, thank you for all your love, kindness and selflessness. Thanks to you I am the person I am today, and I hope I’ve made you proud. You are also the best grandmother in the world.
