Do you need the inspiration to be more active or are you ready to lead a healthier lifestyle? Being active doesn’t have to mean spending hours at the gym. There are many easy and enjoyable ways to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. The good news is that you don’t have to spend money. I found so many ways that are free!
I get it. It’s hard staying active when your job requires you to sit at a desk all day, or you’re busy running and making sure the kids do everything they need to do. There’s just not enough time in the day, and if there is, you’re probably ready to collapse from exhaustion. But breaks are important and your health should not be an afterthought. That’s why I worked on this list with easy ways to be more active so you can improve your health. Best part? Most of them are FREE.
Pro tip: Schedule Time For You!
Maybe you forget to be active? Your to do list never includes time for yourself? You can change that. Add time in your calendar to be physically active, even if it’s a 15 minute walk or time to garden. Bonus points if you schedule the same time block every day. If you use your smartphone’s calendar, it can show you reminders or alerts to get moving.
Easy Ways to Be More Active
If you’re noticing an extra tire around your belly that’s showed up out of nowhere, it’s probably time you consider being more active. Here are 10 easy ways that you can be more active without having to head to the gym. Health.gov even has it’s own guidelines for being active.
Get Yourself a Puppy
Having a dog can be a lot of work, but they can do you a favor by getting you outside and going on walks several times a week. Ever since we got our puppy, Snoopy has made us be more active!
Visit a Free Museum
Visiting a museum is another great way to get your steps in, while at the same time, seeing and observing some fascinating exhibits.
Explore Nature
Are you an outdoorsy type of person? Visit your local parks or get off the beaten path a bit and enjoy nature while staying active.
Walk and Talk
It’s common for people to sit when they are talking on the phone. Try walking and talking at the same time, and you’ll burn far more calories than just sitting there.
Take Breaks
Taking breaks at work sounds like the opposite of staying active, but it gets you away from your desk and you could also walk to a nearby restaurant for lunch or for a quick coffee run.
Play Sports with your Kids
Even if you don’t have kids, I’m sure you have a few nieces and nephews that you could play ball with. It’s great exercise trying to keep up with them.
Stop by the Mall
Visiting and walking the mall is another great way to keep active without having to give much thought to it.
Opt for the Stairs
Yes, elevators are nice, but so are strong calves along with a slim and fit waistline. Take the stairs every time. Climbing stairs is a great way to get your heart rate up and burn some calories. You can even challenge yourself to see how many stairs you can climb in a day.
Go Dancing
Put on some music and dance around your house. Dancing is not only fun, but it’s also a great way to get moving and improve your mood. Looking for a way to get on your spouse’s good side? Take them dancing, which is an excellent way to get into shape. You can even sign up for a class!
Exercise While Watching TV
We get into trouble the more time we spend sitting. That goes for TV time, too. Choose to do some light exercising while you’re watching TV, instead of just sitting there.
Take up gardening
Gardening is a great way to get outside and get some exercise. Digging, planting, and weeding all require physical activity and can help you burn some calories. Plus, you get the added bonus of growing your own fresh produce.
