Rediscovering Tori Amos
A lifetime ago a friend (whom I lost touch with) made me discover the music of Tori Amos. I fell under the spell of her piano, her voice, and (sometimes heartbreaking) songs. Her album Little Earthquakes fascinated me and I used to play it over and over again on my Discman. It was the 90’s, a time when I grew up in so many ways.
Over 20 years later, I have rediscovered Tori Amos. Strange enough, a few days ago a publicist for her label contacted me to share news of her new album. It was a huge surprise in many ways: the email came out of the blue since I don’t usually cover music and because it made me listen again to her songs. Immediately my mind was transported back to the 90’s. Once again I was amazed by her voice and her lyrics, her sensitivity and vulnerability. And also her particular sense of humor.
There is one specific song that touched my heart: Promise. When I saw the video, I realized it was a duo of Tori Amos with her daughter Tash (or Natashya), who is 13 years old. I didn’t even know that Tori was a mom! The song is about how mother and daughter, brought together by beautiful music, promise to be there for each other. As you can imagine, listening to a heartwarming song so full of love made me think of the bonds that any mom (or daughter) can relate to, if they’ve been lucky enough to really share love. Here’s the video:
